WELL DONE: Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz collects the prestigious award from Lions Inga Kasch and Bob Findley, at MarketPlace. Picture: Stephen WarkTHE Melvin Jones award, the Lions’ greatest honour, is usually reserved for Lions or members of the public who make a significant contribution to their community.
It is not so common for the prestigious award to go to a shopping complex, which makes Melvin Jones recipient MarketPlace Raymond Terrace a highly unique and valued organisation.
“Colleen and her team at MarketPlace have demonstrated consistently and over an extensive period of time their commitment to this community in the many ways they support Lions and other service clubs in Raymond Terrace,” said Lions Club of Raymond Terrace president Inga Kasch during the presentation.
“They have in fact been serving the community in this generous manner since the complex was opened.”
Some of the support provided included but was not limited to: sales of Christmas cakes and puddings; Christmas wrappings; wishing well involvement; membership drives; information days; raffles and donation of prizes.
Accepting the award on behalf of the 40-plus retailers and 700 staff were MarketPlace general manager Stewart Murrell and marketing manager Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz.
“This is a great honour achieved over many years working and partnering with the Raymond Terrace community,” Mr Murrell said.
For Mrs Mullholland-Ruiz, the presentation unashamedly brought a tear to her eye.
“We are extremely grateful … at the end of the day the people we support are volunteers for the many charities, schools and not-for-profit organisations working in the community.”
