FIGHTER: Harrison Roston, 3, with his aunt Kaylene Staader and uncle Rod Staader. Picture: Ellie-Marie WattsHARRISON Roston looks like any other happy, healthy three-year-old boy, but beneath that cheeky smile lies a rare genetic disorder that is soon to land him a long hospital stay.
The Medowie toddler, the son of Renee and Lucas Roston, was diagnosed with X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP) when he was two.
XLP is a disorder of the immune system and blood-forming cells that is found almost exclusively in males.
Though Harrison does not look sick and shows few symptoms, germs could be fatal to him.
Treatment for XLP in young patients is a course of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, which Harrison will undergo at Randwick Children’s Hospital in November.
After the treatment, he will stay at a Ronald McDonald house to recover, which all together will see Harrison away from home for up to four months.
Before he undergoes treatment, Harrison will have his long blonde hair cut off and it will be donated to a wig-making charity for children.
“There are children with cancer who don’t have nice hair because of their treatment,” said Harrison’s aunt, Kaylene Staader.
“Harrison has to cut his hair off anyway for the chemo. It only felt right that his hair goes to a charity.”

To help raise funds for Harrison’s treatment, plus buy him an iPad for his long stay in hospital, Mrs Staader and husband Rod are holding an open day at their Raymond Terrace gym.
The Staaders own Nova Mixed Martial Arts, now located opposite Raymond Terrace Library.
From 10am on October 25 there will be a speciality class for children of all ages at the gym. The cost to take part is $5 per child.
From 11.30am there will be a women’s self-defence seminar for a cost of $10, to be followed by martial arts demonstrations from 1pm.
Throughout the day there will be a sausage sizzle, face painting and other activities.
