COORANBONG: A display home at Watagan Park Estate.LAKE Macquarie has one of the highest home building approval rates in the Hunter and Central Coast region.
Figures released by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) show 549 houses have been approved in the city so far this year.
Newcastle has seen 551 approvals.
Last year, Lake Macquarie topped the Hunter regional list with 690 approvals.
HIA Hunter executive director Craig Jennion said Lake Macquarie was a “hot spot” for housing growth in the region.
“Lake Macquarie is a big local government area with a large population, and it has such a diversity of townships all the way around the lake,” Mr Jennion said.
Lake Macquarie City Council said a number of large land releases were producing new residential lots in the city.
“Key new growth areas include the Watagan Park Estate at Cooranbong, Trinity Point at Morisset Park, and the Aquillo Estate at Bonnells Bay,” a council spokesperson said.
“Additionally, in-fill development activity has also increased in Warners Bay and Cooranbong.”
