a group of Bylong Valley farmers are doing their bit to help drought-stricken producers stay on their feet.

The group, led by Sue Gunn, “Wigelmar”, and local farmer and livestock carrier John Mead, “Meadsville”, are planning five semi-trailer loads of hay with all transport, fuel and fodder costs donated.

It will be delivered to those in need at Walgett late this month.

About 600 rate paying farmers in the Walgett shire will be notified about the drive, and will be given the opportunity to nominate their property to go into the draw to receive a semi load of hay, which equates to about 40 bales.

Mrs Gunn said this would ease the load for farmers feeding stock.

“We are working on five loads, but are very hopeful there will be more than that,” she said.

She said it was decided the successful farmers would receive a whole load, rather than giving out a few bales to many farmers.

They felt this way the delivery would make a more worthwhile contribution to those who received it.

Kepco Bylong Australia manager Henry Bosman, Bylong Station, said Kepco was donating 40 round bales for the Walgett farmers.

The properties owned by Kepco in the Bylong Valley are primarily lucerne and cattle operations.

Mr Bosman said this season the business had sold about 70 per cent of its lucerne.

“Kepco’s aim is to maintain agricultural production on all its properties,” he said.

“(The company is) very community minded and when the hay drive came up, there was no hesitation to jump on the bandwagon to donate hay.”

“My wife (Gail) and I are from South Africa, I have been through drought before in this country and our own,” said Mr Bosman (pictured).

“I have seen first hand the effect on people, livestock and the environment.

“I know that 40 round bales will be a huge help.”
