MILDURA Council could sell off its six portable grandstands and buy new permanent stands under a plan designed to minimise the cost of maintaining and transporting them to major events.

The changes would affect some of Sunraysia’s biggest sporting events, including the Grand Tennis International, Sunraysia Football Netball League finals, the Merbein Rodeo and some speedway titles.
The council has hired out the grandstands free of charge and paid for 80 per cent of the associated transportation costs but a report prepared by council staff indicated the “fragile” grandstands were in increasing need of maintenance.
It has cost the council an average of $1300 to transport each stand to an event – a figure which has continued to rise – while use of the grandstands has declined.
If councillors approve the sale at tomorrow night’s general meeting, $24,500 previously allocated each year to transportation of the grandstands would be redirected to a grant program for grandstand access, which would require sporting groups to match 50 per cent of the council’s contribution.
