Just a few years later the 10-year-old is the youngest student Shihan Bob King has awarded a junior black belt to.
King, master instructor of Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu at Raymond Terrace, said the black belt was recognition of DJ reaching a certain level of junior attainment.
Going beyond just being able to punch and kick, to achieve the rank a student must be proficient in their knowledge of Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu and behave in a respectful and courteous manner, which King said the dojo emphasised.
“From a pretty early stage I saw a lot of potential in DJ,” King said.
“We’ve had our ups and downs and fights about things like attitude not being what I would like, but to his credit he has changed and improved.”
The achievement is extra special to DJ who has overcome an adverse background to wear the junior black belt.
“I’m proud of myself,” he said.
